Crowdfunding Goal

Backers and pledge size needed to hit funding goal.

About this calculator

Crowdfunding success is largely a math problem dressed up as creative marketing. The campaigns that fund (and fund big) treat it as a launch with deterministic targets: backers needed, daily pledges, milestone gating, and email list conversion math. Campaigns that "see what happens" usually don\'t fund.

This calculator works the math backwards from goal to required backers, then forward to daily targets and milestone gating. The first 48 hours target (30% of goal) is critical — Kickstarter and Indiegogo algorithms favor campaigns with strong early momentum, and campaigns that miss this benchmark have substantially lower success rates regardless of total goal.

The single most important pre-launch metric is email list size. Successful product campaigns typically launch with 5,000-25,000 pre-launch subscribers and convert 5-15% on launch day. A campaign with no email list trying to drive backers from cold ads typically converts at 1-3%, requiring 5-10× more ad spend. The email list build is a 3-6 month pre-campaign investment that determines campaign outcome more than any element of the campaign itself.

Pair with the Product Launch Cost Calculator (full launch budget including marketing) and the Tax Estimate calculator (crowdfunding revenue is taxable in the year received, even if product ships next year). Most successful campaigns work backwards from goal: required backers → required email list → required pre-launch marketing budget → start 6 months before launch.

Frequently asked questions
How many backers does a typical campaign need?
Median Kickstarter campaign: 200-500 backers. Successful product launches: 500-2,000 backers. Major launches: 5,000-50,000+ backers. Average pledge across categories is $80-120, so a $100K goal typically needs ~1,000 backers.
What's the typical conversion rate for crowdfunding traffic?
1-3% on cold traffic from ads. 5-10% on warm traffic (email list, prior backers). 15-25% on referrals. Crowdfunding conversion is HIGHER than ecommerce conversion because the audience is self-selected (interested in funding new products).
How important is the first 48 hours?
Critical. Campaigns that hit 30%+ of goal in first 48 hours have ~80% success rate. Campaigns that hit under 10% in first 48 hours have ~25% success rate. Algorithm visibility is determined early — slow start = death spiral.
Should I have an email list before launching?
Yes. Successful campaigns typically have 5,000-25,000 pre-launch email subscribers. Convert at 5-15% on launch day. The email list is the difference between hitting goal in week 1 and grinding for 30 days. Build for 3-6 months pre-launch.
What's the all-in cost of running a campaign?
Platform fees: 5-8% (Kickstarter 5%, Indiegogo 5%). Payment processing: 3-5%. Pre-launch marketing: $5-50K depending on scale. Video production: $3-15K. Plus the inventory, fulfillment, customs, and shipping costs after success. Net 65-75% of pledge revenue typically.
