About this tool

Modern paid social demands creative in 4-6 aspect ratios — sometimes for the same campaign. A single Meta launch might need 4:5 for Feed, 1:1 for Carousel, 9:16 for Stories and Reels, plus 1.91:1 for the link preview. Designers who don\'t plan for this end up either uploading the wrong dimensions and getting auto-cropped, or producing 4 separate masters and burning hours.

The smart workflow is to design once at the largest aspect (9:16, 1080×1920) with critical content in the middle 80% of the canvas, then crop down to derivative formats. This calculator shows what each crop will look like dimensionally so you can plan composition correctly.

The other use case is converting an existing master to a platform-required aspect. Got a 1920×1080 hero shot for the homepage? It needs to become 1080×1080 for Meta Feed (likely losing left/right edges) and 1080×1920 for Stories (need to add top/bottom matter or use a cropped version). The tool shows the converted dimensions for any input source.

Pair this with the Ad Image Size Reference for full platform spec sheets and the Ad Copy Character Counter for headline/primary-text length limits. Together they cover most "what dimension / character count do I need?" questions a performance creative team faces.

Frequently asked questions
What aspect ratio should I design for first?
Vertical 9:16 (1080×1920). Mobile carries 80%+ of ad impressions, and 9:16 is the native format for Stories, Reels, TikTok Feed, and Snapchat. You can crop a 9:16 down to 4:5 (Meta Feed) or 1:1 (square placements) without losing the main subject if you compose with safe areas in mind.
Why does Meta favor 4:5 in Feed?
4:5 (1080×1350) takes more vertical real estate in mobile Feed than 1:1 (1080×1080), increasing ad visibility and CTR by ~10-15% in Meta's testing. Square is still accepted but gets less vertical space and lower performance on average.
When do I actually need 16:9 horizontal?
YouTube TrueView, in-stream ads, Connected TV (CTV), LinkedIn Sponsored Content (still common in horizontal), and certain Google Display placements. Most other 2026 placements are vertical or square.
Will my creative get distorted if I just upload a square to a 9:16 placement?
It will be cropped, not distorted — typically center-cropped, which means the top and bottom of your composition disappear. Always design with the target aspect ratio in mind, or design at the largest dimension (9:16) and crop down to derivative formats.
What about safe areas?
On Stories and Reels, the top ~250px and bottom ~250px of a 1080×1920 creative are covered by platform UI (profile info, captions, CTA button). Keep critical content (logos, product, hero text) in the middle 1300px to avoid getting partially obscured.
